Lorenzo Miani is a visiting PhD student based in the School of Education at the University of Southampton.
His current research focuses on the role that uncertainty can play in the formation and study of climate change. In particular, his research focuses on how different types of uncertainty related to climate science can lead to the development of sustainability competencies. The research held in his first two years revolved around the study of the GreenComp framework and the approaches to Extreme Events related to Climate Change. Starting from this study, he focuses on the design and implementation development of a course on climate change aimed at students from secondary school, using tools related to the world of complex systems and futures studies. He follows a design-based approach, using qualitative methods to gather and analyse data.
During his time at the University of Southampton, he will work under the supervision of Dr. Park to explore the field of Disaster Education focusing on climate-related issues.
Lorenzo acted as a tutor for several courses at the University of Bologna, and recently created and taught his own course named “Toward new Future Scenarios: the role of Physics in the study of Climate Change” together with his colleague Francesco De Zuani Cassina, also PhD at the University of Bologna.
He conducted both his Bachelor (2019) and Master (2021) degrees in Physics and Physics Education from the University of Bologna. His master's thesis is titled “Highlighting Interdisciplinarity between Physics and Mathematics in Historical Papers on Special Relativity: Design of Blended Activities for Pre-Service Teacher Education”. He is currently conducting a PhD at the University of Bologna, with a work titled “STEM education and Climate Change: Building multi-disciplinary and multi-actors Open Schooling models to overcome boundaries”.
