About this course
With this French and Philosophy degree, you’ll become fluent in a major international language and spend a year in a French-speaking country. You'll also study philosophy, which will deepen your ability to analyse and communicate.
What you learn will prepare you for work across the world. French is native to France, Belgium, Switzerland, Canada and the French Caribbean, and it’s an official language in much of Africa and Asia.
You’ll start at a level that matches your ability in spoken and written French, which helps ensure rapid progress.
You’ll also have resources to support you, including the Centre for Language Study which offers things like language and academic advising.
A module in year 2 prepares you for the following year abroad, which you'll spend in either a work placement, a British Council placement or at one of Southampton’s partner universities.

Course structure
You will begin with a 50/50 split of core modules in French and Philosophy. As the course progresses you'll be able to combine building your mastery of French with a wide range of options. This allows you to tailor your learning to suit your interests and ambitions. You can also take courses from different subject areas, or learn an additional language.
To give you the best possible start, we use our system of 7 language levels to work out your proficiency in French. We can then make sure our teaching develops your skills as effectively as possible.
Year 1 overview
You’ll improve your French and we’ll introduce you to the study of ethics, reason and cultural forms.
You'll also have a diverse range of optional choices. Topics include:
- faith and reason
- applications of linguistics
- understanding history and society
- applied ethics
Year 2 overview
You’ll develop your listening, reading, writing and speaking language skills through a core French language module.
This will be supplemented with an exploration of appearance and reality within philosophy, and a range of optional topics, including:
- the philosophy of art
- logic
- French linguistics
- identities in the Francophone context
- ethnography
Year 3 overview
In year 3 you'll undertake your period abroad, in which you'll complete an assessed portfolio of work which counts as a double module and is used to determine progression to year 4.
This will be your opportunity to:
- work independently on focused tasks as you acquire more knowledge of the target language, culture and society
- get to know a foreign culture first hand, either as a student or in a work placement
- practice using the foreign language; you'll be ideally placed to get to know the people, with many lifelong friendships made during this period
We aim to support you, mainly by frequent email contact/video chat sessions.
Reasonable adjustments will be made for individual students who are unable to spend a period abroad. Year 3 contributes to the final degree classification.
Year 4 overview
After returning to the UK, you'll continue to perfect your French, whilst also focusing on areas of interest that you've developed during your studies.
You could choose to do a dissertation in either philosophy or modern languages. Alternatively, you could explore topics ranging anywhere from Nietzsche to Heidegger, or from refugees in twentieth-century France, to sex, gender and desire in French culture.
