The Biomedical Imaging Unit (BIU) is a joint facility of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Southampton and University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS), dedicated to high quality and high resolution imaging in 2D, 3D and 4D by light, electron and X-ray microscopy.
We are located at University Hospital Southampton, some 2 miles from the main University Campus at Highfield and provide research microscopy support to the Faculty of Medicine, the wider University, other universities, industry and artists. and diagnostic electron microscopy services to UHS and other hospitals in the UK and abroad.

We are accredited by UKAS under ISO 15189 for the provision of diagnostic electron microscopy.
Our equipment includes a range of state-of-the-art instruments and facilities for 2D, 3D and 4D imaging using a wide range of imaging modalities;

We run formal training courses in transmission electron microscopy and advanced light microscopy that are accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) and provide 1-to-1 training for specific instruments, applications and analyses for facility users as well as support and advice on methodology and experimental design. Our NHS diagnostic services for several NHS Trusts include TEM, SEM and X-ray microanalysis. We are also a national referral unit for the specialist diagnosis of Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia (PCD) through combined light and electron microscopy approaches. We host occasional informal meetings and workshops on specific microscopy topics for local users that feature both internal and external speakers View presentations from past user group meetings
