Dear Colleagues,
Following from the release of the UK Research Councils' archiving
requirements, SHERPA is pleased to be able to release a new advice list
called JULIET as a service to authors, academics and repository
advocates.
SHERPA's new JULIET service breaks down the differing requirements from
each of the UK Research Councils (and others) to try and simplify
* what the policy says has to be done
* what authors should archive
* when they should archive
* where they should archive their outputs
The list then categorises the different sets of advice in comparison to
an idealised Open Access funding mandate.
The JULIET list is available from www.sherpa.ac.uk/juliet
The JULIET list complements the well-known RoMEO list
(
http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo.php), which summarises publishers'
permissions for archiving research articles. It is intended to add other
policies from other funding bodies to JULIET as these become available.
The Research Councils' announcement will bring Open Access and archiving
to the attention of academics and authors who may never have heard of
Open Access, in spite of all of our best efforts. Through the SHERPA
site, authors can also find advice on open access and what it means to
them. The advice then points them in the direction of a further list on
the site showing current UK repositories and associated contacts within
institutions. The contact emails for the SHERPA partners are already
included: I am contacting others for their permission to include their
contact details so there is a single point of contact for Open Access
issues within each institution. This covers the UK so far. See
http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/guidance/instcontacts.html
SHERPA provides summaries of
* open access to research results - guidance/authors
* what funders want authors to do - JULIET
* what publishers will allow authors to do - RoMEO
* which repository to use - OpenDOAR and specific UK list
* where to go for help - institutional contacts list
Just go to the SHERPA site and choose "Guidance"

Regards,
Bill
SHERPA is based at the University of Nottingham and works on a portfolio
of projects related to Open Access and repository development, currently
funded by JISC, CURL, Open Societies Institute and SPARCEurope.
