In a departure from previous releases of EPrints software, the latest major
version has initially been made available to EPrints Community members.
Members have been encouraged to adopt a whole-team approach to assessing
the new version. Rather than simply reviewing code and seeking out bugs,
they have been invited to report on what works best, what could be
improved, what features require additional documentation, what is missing
and where future effort should be focussed.
For any software development project introducing a raft of new features,
choosing which features to optimise at any given moment is something of a
guess. Working with the Community offers the chance to improve this process
and give the developers extra steer.
Membership of the EPrints Community has been growing among serious users of
the software, especially those with an institutional commitment to an
EPrints repository, and for whom sustainability of the software and
influence over future development are key factors.
Further releases of version 3.0 of the software, beta and full releases,
will be openly available to all within weeks. Community members will
continue to steer and influence ongoing development.
