New policy of combining one-on-one postings

Dear members of the American Scientist Open Access Forum:

The membership of this Forum has grown considerably and now includes
not only representatives of the library community and the publisher
community, but also the research community, the research-funding
community, the administration of US and European universities and
research institutions (and a goodly number of lurking journalists!). As
a consequence, I would like to implement a slight change in moderation
policy:

Individual, substantive postings, intended to inform the entire Forum,
will continue to be posted individually and immediately as received. But
short, frequent, one-on-one postings, consisting of brief exchanges
between individuals, will be gathered and posted collectively, rather
than one at a time, so as to keep the number of individual postings down
to a number that will not force members to leave the Forum.

Authors are accordingly asked to branch such one-on-one postings both to
the Forum *and* to their interlocutor. This will allow the exchanges to
continue offline, while I gather together the bits to post them jointly
at a slightly later point, as in the next posting on the thread "The
Economics of Open Access Journal Publishing."

Please help me by always stating clearly to whom you are replying, and
always including a brief but sufficient quotation from your interlocutor
so it will be clear exactly what you are replying to.

(Forum members who would like to receive postings even less frequently are
reminded that they can set their option to "Digest" and the AmSci listserv
software will automatically send postings in periodic bundles, instead of
sending each one individually: Here is the web page to change your settings:

Be sure to enter the email address at which you receive the postings.)

Many thanks,
