I should perhaps offer an additional fine distinction about jake. A
quick glance at the literature for jake suggests it is a database and a
linking service, but I think strictly it is a 'facility' for linking,
i.e. it needs additional support to be used for linking. The Openly
service I refer to below is an example of adding support for linking to
jake. It is actually downloadable software, called the Openly Jake
Wrapper Servlet, which 'cleanly separates code and data, so in
principle, you can use it for lots of stuff besides the serials data
that Jake was originally built for'. I've quoted because, not having
downloaded, installed and used OJWS myself, I'm not absolutely clear
how it works, and Eric Hellman of Openly usually has to correct me on
these matters. Interestingly, Openly is explicitly targetting the same
market as SFX with this.
