Christmas lights twinkled on campus as Ocean and Earth Science postgraduates took part in Winter Graduation at the University of Southampton.

The ceremony marked the conclusion of many months of hard work as friends and family in the Turner Sims Concert Hall applauded their success. The graduates were congratulated by senior academics from the University and joined on stage by the lecturers who had taught them throughout their studies.

Achievements included PhDs in advanced research and Masters of Science or Masters of Research degrees in Marine Environment and Resources, Marine Geology and Geophysics, Ocean Sciences and Oceanography.

“This is always a memorable day for our graduates,” explains Associate Dean for Education, Professor Sarah Stevenage.

“Proudly wearing traditional academic gowns, they enjoy receiving their degrees and celebrating their achievements with their loved ones, alongside their fellow students. Following today’s ceremony, many will depart to their home countries around the world and it may be some time before they can meet up again.”

Professor Rachel Mills, Dean of Environmental and Life Sciences adds: “Winter Graduation is a special event in our calendar.

“We are confident that our newest graduates will be changing the world for the better in everything that they do. We remember their fantastic contributions to our learning community and their huge impact while on placement, when volunteering, and on the day to day life on all of our campuses.

“We thank all of you for your enthusiasm, your energy and ideas and your commitment to your path as you forge forwards as graduates of the University of Southampton.”
