Make a decision

After you've received all decisions back from the institutions you've applied to, you need to choose your firm and insurance choices.

You can find further advice if you want to make a decision before hearing back from all of your choices on the UCAS website.

UCAS provides information of your deadline date by which you must make your choices. This should also be made clear to you on UCAS Track.

After you've made your decision, you'll need to make sure you check your offer. Review this thoroughly to see if you need to complete any outstanding conditions, other than meeting the academic requirements.

If you don’t complete all the requirements, we won’t be able to confirm your place on results day until you provide this information, even if you meet the grades.

If you're not going to be available in the period leading up to results day, please ensure you've set up a nominated contact on the UCAS website so we can talk to them on your behalf.

Once we've made you an offer, we’ll invite you to an on-campus visit day and a virtual visit opportunity.

You’ll be able to:

  • learn more about your course and the modules, meet your lecturers, and find out where you’ll study
  • chat to students to find out about student life and what it’s like to live and study here
  • find out more about our campuses, sports facilities, the library, accommodation options, and student support services

After your place has been confirmed, and you’ve met all the requirements for the course you’d like to defer, email admissions@southampton.ac.uk, so we can review your request.

You should explain the reason you're choosing to defer your place and how you'll benefit from the experience if you request a deferral of an offer.

For some degree programmes, such as those that have limited places available, it may not be possible to defer an offer of a place.

You cannot defer your place if you're applying through Clearing.

You can find more information in our Admissions Policy.

You can apply for your visa when you receive an unconditional offer.

Students who are not British or Irish Citizens may need to apply for a visa.

UCAS sends us results for most UK qualifications, so you won't usually have to do anything when you get your results if you've applied through UCAS.

If you were CF (conditional firm) with us and have completed all the requirements of your offer, this should have been updated to UF (unconditional firm).

If the University of Southampton was your insurance choice, and you didn’t get a place at your first choice, we'll automatically become your first choice if you meet the conditions of your offer with us.

We'll send you welcome instructions soon after your results have been confirmed, which will explain all you need to know before starting your course in September.

If your place isn’t confirmed by results day in August, and you're not sure why, contact admissions@southampton.ac.uk.

If you’ve received an offer but don’t meet the conditions, you may still be considered for the course you've applied for once we've received all applicant results.

This will depend on what other applicants have achieved and how much space we have. We'll also try to identify suitable other courses and offer places on these where possible.

If you’re getting a re-mark or appealing your grades, you should contact us to confirm which subjects are being re-marked or appealed. You can submit this information to us through a form on our Clearing webpage in August, after you get your results.
