Equality, diversity and inclusion

Mary, Ship Science student in Engineering

We believe strongly in providing equal opportunities for all staff and students and have ongoing monitoring and actions to help us achieve this aim.

The School of Engineering holds an Athena SWAN Bronze award, which recognises our commitment to tackling gender inequality.

The Athena SWAN (Scientific Women's Academic Network) Charter is a global framework which is used to promote inclusive working practices and transform gender equality within higher education and research.

The School of Engineering Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (ED&I) Committee co-ordinates our Athena SWAN applications. Our current Athena SWAN action plan can be found at the bottom of the page.

Institutionally, the University of Southampton holds an Athena SWAN Silver award.

Athena SWAN successes in the School of Engineering include:

Equality and diversity are central to the ethos in the School of Engineering at Southampton, and we have retained a Bronze Athena SWAN Award since 2013. Our continued work on equality, diversity and inclusivity demonstrates our continuing commitment to building a positive environment that allows all members of the School of Engineering to share in our achievements, and in the development and success of our department.

Professor Richards and Dr Jen Muggleton together co-chair the School of Engineering ED&I Committee. They are also both members of the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences (FEPS) EDI forum, as well as the Athena SWAN forum, through which best practice can be shared across the faculty and the university more broadly.
