Environmental Processes Laboratory

About the Environmental Processes Laboratory

This Laboratory Suite supports research and teaching in Physical Geography. This includes laboratories and field equipment for the collection and analysis of environmental samples Such as sediments, water and vegetation, and equipment for scaled experiments in hydrology and aeolian geomorphology.

The facility supports research and student projects from a range of disciplines including geography, Engineering, and Biological Science.

We welcome enquiries for the following services:

  • particle size analysis by sieving and/or laser granulometry

  • organic matter content determination by loss on ignition

  • x-ray fluorescence analysis

Our experiments

  • Armfield S12 Advanced Environmental Hydrology System: this is used for fluvial geomorphology experiments.

  • Sand dune Avalanche slope: this experiment recreates the process of sand dune migration.

  • Malvern Mastersizer 3000 Particle Size Analyser-measures the proportions of sand, silt and clay in sediment samples.

  • Niton Portable X-ray Fluoresce Analyser (XRF)- measures elemental composition of samples.
